The ICQ servers accept the passwords of not more then 8 characters!
Yes some alternative clients allow to enter a longer password, in reality it is automatically decreased to 8 characters. If your password is longer then 8 characters you must enter only first 8.
How to retrieve the password
I forgot my password but I always start with the saved one. How can I know it?
The simplest way is to change the password to a new one:
— just in case backup the file rnq.ini
— start with the saved password
— turn MD5 off (Main menu/Preferences/Privacy & Security)
— enter a new password instead of asterisks (Main menu/Preferences/Connection/Password)
— reply "Yes" to the question "Do you want to save the password on the server?"
I decided to turn MD5 hash on, the program suggested saving the password on the server, I agreed... As the result when I tried to login next time, I saw the message "wrong password". All the clients show the same. Help!
The main mistake was that you saved the password on the server ;-) Now you must do the following:
— turn MD5 on (Main menu/Preferences/Privacy & Security)
— erase the asterisks (Main menu/Preferences/Connection/Password)
— accept the preferences
— try to login entering your password in the splash window
— choose the offline status
— turn MD5 off (Main menu/Preferences/Privacy & Security)
— in the password field (Main menu/Preferences/Connection/Password) leave only 8 characters (before there must be 16)
— accept preferences and try to connect
— being online enter any password you want to the password field (Main menu/Preferences/Connection/Password), now it will be your new password
Now you can allow the program to change the password on the server.
